Working – Day 1

So, i got the job that i wanted. it makes me think back of the time when i was often told, if you really want something, you would get it. because your entire body and soul works towards it. perhaps i really wasn’t interested in getting a job in the last 3 years after all.

regardless..!!!

today was my first day. was generally told to bring my big smile that i had during my interview (more like a glazed look really) and to wear tan pants. initially, i wanted to shop for the pants during the weekend, got lazy tho and left it till today. but they didnt sell the type of tan pants i was wanting to find. anyways, phatness got in the way. blah.

eventually got some berms thingy instead. YES!!! i wore BERMMMSSSS to work.

1) comparisons-

i know it sounds bad, and i shouldn’t be comparing it to work in singapore. moreover, it is my first day, i have yet to see how things really are. they are seriously… serious about having fun at work :o from what i was told anyways. they said they hired me more out of personality than the fact that i had any real experiences. as long as i fitted in, i am in.

in singapore, i don’t think they care much about experiences either, just that if u r part tim-ing, time for training can get really into the way. but in singapore, even in the least formal of places, there are the tightest code of conducts. thus, most of my training has more often than not been fine dining training, despite the “informal” lay outs they might have been.

for the first time, i wear my running shoes to work. it’s comfy, and my pink socks were showing. no one cared :D hell, i think i can even wear my frooty looking socks to work, as long as “i am having fun”. even in the kitchen, they were throwing balls at each other O.o crazy fun chefs!

i know, they aren’t essentially a fine dining restaurant, but i am so used to the tight arsed manner of waitressing, i was actually dreading having to face that again. again, it’s only my first day, still leaves alot to be seen. but for now, i feel really happy ^_^

the restaurant is so australian, the manager even more bogan than imaginable, somehow, i just loved it all. hehehehe.

also, i get off the job whenever manager says so, and the restaurant closes whenever the manager deems it to be able to close. so… it’s a really flexible place X-D although i am just on training today, and supposed to worked longer, things got a little complicated, and i was left alone to get familiarized to bits and pieces by myself.

essentially what i was worried about were more on table numbers and hearing the ding from the kitchen. so i trained myself to listen closely. i still miss some dings tho, but i did clear as much tables as i could and managed to remember the tables from the important side somewhat.

2) uniforms –

they still had to have uniforms tho, to identify us from guests and yer for guests to identify us. but i was lead to the theme shop, and told to pick out any shirt i like :o complete with a cap and a cute apron. but because they have a variety of shirts and stuff, we still look casual despite being “uniformed”, which was cool.

to me, it’s like inviting someone to your home. i was honed and trained in customer service, and i had always been in love with a part of customer services whereby you treat customers like someone u would care about. unlike restaurants and places where i used to work, it’s a little deeper than just “hi, can i get you a drink”.

don’t know if i make sense there :P

3) the actual training –

despite however laid back they may be, like normal restaurants, there are still certain criterias i have to meet before i can officially serve. namely the customs of the servitude (what to say when u are serving.. blah blah… what not to do…) as well as knowing the menu. so while i did have some experience, i can’t be asked to serve the floor.

hell, i don’t even know where everything is. well i know most of it now, just not enough. plus, i don’t really know the full menu, and the new menu items. thus, it’s better that i stay hidden in the background ^_^

it was fun though, being able to work again. running from place to place, clearing table. the usual bitching at the back about strange customers.

yes. we all do that. everyone does that. anyone who works and doesn’t whine about a customer is lying. some times it’s just to let everyone have a laugh, other times it’s to get it off our chests. really nothing wrong with it. however, i know some people who thinks “ooo this little waitress is bitching about me! fire herr!!!!”

bleah. we don’t owe it to you to stfu.

there’s of course learning the table settings, where the fork should go, where the knife should go, where the salt should go… it’s been a long long while.

perhaps it doesn’t sound like it, but right from the start i was told to relax and don’t be too serious, coz i seemed like i was preparing to be serious O.o . at any rate, when i was left alone, i was worried that i had be slacking too much anyways. everyone seemed busy with something, but because of the number of people on the floor, i was really just an extra, in my opinion. still, i tried to find things to do.

from clearing tables, to grabbing food from the “pass”, to cleaning utensils, keeping busy wasn’t too hard until i have to sweep the floor. some of the tables are arranged in a weird way, so i couldn’t reach too far in without shoving my ass into some customer’s face.

/ignore the little paper.

oops :X

still it was an awesome start to my new casual work place. i was told my pay, when i would be next in (friday), where to sign in and out and got off 2 hours 45 mins after i first started. the night manager thought i was all right, again, everything still remains to be seen. he felt i was great in the initiative department and the amount of questions i drilled into my trainer.

then again, my trainer was funny. i hadn’t actually read through the new menu, but she actually quizzed me as to what was new, what was special, which other things they served, to name all of this and that O.o . frequent diner is one thing, what i normally do know about the menu though is fairly limited to what i eat so… i can’t really know what is on the menu without reading through it :P

i love this place already :D

tired…

need to sleepppp… (walking home was a bad idea)
